Amanda: Ask Me

Eating HabitsMarch 16, 2010

Following up on my last tip – I’ve been changing my diet to help get in better shape.  I’m cutting out most sugars , bye bye candy :( , and getting my carbs through fruits and veggies, also eating more protein.  I’ve been cooking a lot more and being aware of what I put in my body.  Try to do one thing to better your eating habits!

Cutting the Sugar OutJanuary 14, 2010

My training tip for everyone is something that I am personally working on myself. To cut a lot of the sugar out of my diet. I tend to drink a lot of juice and have a major sweet tooth, so I’m trying to limit the sweets I eat to stay healthier and be stronger in my training.  My husband told me the best thing to do is when I am craving a sweet to eat protein, so far it is working. I keep some turkey slices in my fringe for those moments.

Starting off a RoutineDecember 19, 2009

Starting off a routine you should ease into it. Start with about three swim workouts a week for the first three weeks. I would say to focus mainly on freestyle for that time and definitely try and bring a buddy who is motivated to swim like you are. Your goal should be practical, start with how many laps you would like to accomplish and have a clock on the pool deck so you can time yourself. Here would be my suggestion for a basic practice for the first three weeks.

  • Warm Up
  • 300 (100 swim, 100 kick, 100 pull)
  • 6×50 (1 kick, 1 drill, 1 swim)
  • 200 IM Drill
  • 2×100 Kick
  • 2×100 Swim
  • 8×25 (1 easy, 1 fast)
  • Warm Down

This ends up being about a mile long practice, go on intervals that are comfortable and slowly make them faster over the weeks. Try and time yourself on the 25’s fast and see if you can get faster as the weeks go.
